Ten Years of Taekwon-Do for Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do School

korean tkd11 88x300 Ten Years of Taekwon Do for Brighton & Hove Taekwon Do SchoolBrighton & Hove Taekwon-Do School turned 10 this February. Throughout the relatively short period of time, vast changes have been made since the very first class was opened at Withdean Sports Centre. Initially opening this class, i knew it was going to be difficult, there were already several variant styles of Taekwon-Do classes in Brighton and Hove, plus many other martial arts which were on offer (karate, kick boxing, kung fu and aikido, to name but a few) which were already well established, within the community. This of course I knew, and although the prospect of opening a new Taekwon-Do school was daunting, I wanted to add to and provide another dimension to this city already a great place for martial arts.

Over these years the school has expanded and now offers 7 adult classes and 7 children’s classes each week. Students are able to choose from a wide range of classes which are spread across Brighton and Hove. Classes are truly diverse and range from the ‘tots’ class for children aged 3-5 years to the newly set up ‘Women’s Only Taekwon-Do Class’ run by Ms Jo Lee and Ms Katerina Avramides both 1st Degree Black Belts. The school promotes in a way that is highly inclusive, age, height or gender are by no means limiting factors, we have students training regularly from 3 years to people in their late 50’s. This only makes the school better, giving a friendly, open and creative training environment.

Some of the adult/teen students train 5-6 times each week, week-in week-out. However, many of my students will train 3-4 times a week and gain a tremendous level of technique, fitness, strength and self control. Providing regular squad training sessions, junior ‘Extreme Team’ sessions, Black Belt Grading Training Sessions as well as competitions and the new fledgling development of the Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do ‘Extreme Team’ which incorporates taking red and black belts to International Competitions. I also host Master’s Seminars held by our parent association ‘Taekwon-Do Impact’.

Having a wide range of classes for people to choose from allows people to pick and choose to suit their hectic schedules as well as dedicate themselves to training to the highest level.

Over the past 10 years through much dedicated Indomitable Spirit, Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do has produced 24 Black Belts. These are not so called black belts who have trained lightly in something masquerading as a martial art, turning up for 1-2 training sessions per week for 2-2 1/2 years then being given a black belt. These are students who have trained extremely hard, been tested thoroughly and been graded by ‘Taekwon-Do Impact’ founder ; Master Donato Nardizzi 8th Degree. Each and every one of these Black Belts can be hugely proud of their achievement.

Even the youngsters are asked to perform to the highest requirements if they wish to achieve the proud accolade of Black Belt. This can mean that some fall by the wayside. In order to achieve Black Belt one needs a huge amount of determination, dedication, perseverance and indomitable spirit. There is nothing easy about obtaining an ITF Taekwon-Do Black Belt. Each and every person who has reached this far has achieved something very special.

Through the natural growth of the school the expectations and standard has reached a new level and will continue to develop in the coming years. Now some of my students have moved beyond simply gaining their black belt and have now trained up to 2nd Degree and 3rd Degree Black Belt. In the not too distant future I am looking forward to having the school’s first 4th Degree student.

However, despite the standard being very high the one thing that is repeated time and again by those training is just how friendly the classes are. The level of support and camaraderie throughout all the classes is fantastic to see. It is great to watch both prior to the beginning of any class and during the classes themselves students helping each other and giving advice to each other and the junior grades.

Within the adult/teen classes it is often the case that over 50 % of the class is made up of Red Belts and Black Belts, senior grades, which is fantastic to see. And many of these students have trained with me from a young age, but still continue to show their dedication despite taking gaps in their training to go to university or moving for work.

Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do students have each year surpassed themselves in so many different aspects, but one measurable way can be shown through competition and the haul of medals that is achieved at the National Competitions both for juniors and adults each year.

It is often the case that ITF practitioners visiting the UK come and train at Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do and sometimes we get Korean WTF practitioners come and enjoy the training here at an UK ITF Taekwon-Do School. We welcome all martial arts practitioners to come and train and experience ITF Taekwon-Do.

As the Chief Instructor it is of great pride that I go to each of my classes and see the enthusiasm and dedication of the Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do students. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to live my life doing something that I totally enjoy and believe in. I thank all those that have trained with me, who are training here at Brighton and Hove Taekwon-Do School and look forward to seeing many new students come and enjoy this vibrant, friendly, dedicated group of ITF Martial Artists.

And now for the next 10 years!

Howard Mayes
